Internships
Internships are hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that allow students to gain practical experience, enhance their skills, build professional networks, and improve their employability. Internships help students develop both hard skills specific to a career pathway and soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. They also provide opportunities to explore multiple career paths, earn academic credit, build resumes, and potentially earn money. Full-time Internships typically last a few months, during which an individual works the standard number of hours for a full-time employee — usually 35-40 per week. Part-time Internships typically last a few months and involve working less than 20 hours per week.
Whether you’re just getting started or ready to earn academic credit, internships are a powerful way to gain real-world experience and explore your career interests. Students who are approved to earn academic credit (typically juniors and seniors) must register their internship in Handshake. This ensures your experience is officially recognized for credit and helps Columbus State University celebrate student success. All students, including freshmen and sophomores, are encouraged to report their internships or experiential learning opportunities in Handshake. Doing so connects you to valuable resources, guidance, and recognition for your hands-on learning.

Apply for an Internship Scholarship with the Thayer Scholars Program
The Thayer Scholars Program provides financial support for Columbus State University juniors and seniors participating in high-impact experiential learning opportunities that advance their career goals. Made possible through the generous support of the Pamela and John P. Thayer Sr. Fund, this program helps students engage in internships, undergraduate research, and service-learning projects that may otherwise be financially out of reach.
Thayer Scholars may receive funding to offset living expenses and other costs associated with completing their approved experiential learning experience. Awards are distributed annually and are available for opportunities that directly connect to a student’s major, intended career field, or graduate study goals. Internships must meet the criteria set by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
In addition to financial support, Thayer Scholars participate in professional development activities and networking events designed to help them become well-prepared graduates with a strong foundation for future success.
To be considered for the Thayer Scholars Program, applicants must:
- Be a junior or senior at Columbus State University
- Be enrolled in at least 1 credit hour
- Demonstrate financial need
- Maintain good academic standing
- Participate in an experiential learning opportunity (internship, undergraduate research, or service-learning) connected to their career field or graduate program goals
Selection
Recipients are selected by the Director of the Center for Career Design. Selected students receive the designation Thayer Scholar.
Current Opportunity for All Majors

- Liability and Insurance:
- For unpaid internships, students are generally not covered under CSU’s workers’ compensation or liability insurance policies. Employers should be informed that they are expected to carry their own appropriate coverage, particularly if the student is onsite.
- For paid internships, students are considered employees of the internship site and should be covered under that employer’s workers’ compensation policy.
- Affiliation Agreements:
- If the internship is for academic credit and involves off-campus placements, CSU should have a basic agreement or MOU with the internship site outlining the responsibilities of both parties.
- FERPA Compliance:
- Any data collected in Handshake, including student academic information, will be managed according to FERPA.
- Risk and Safety:
- Students should report workplace concerns or incidents during their internships to the internship coordinator and the Center for Career Design.
- CSU does not guarantee the safety or employment conditions at external internship sites.
